Metro could see cuts in federal funding
Metro General Manager Richard Sarles joined other transit officials Wednesday to raise concern about possible federal funding cuts to public transportation.
The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) held a conference call with transit executives from across the country who are concerned about a new transportation bill that would cut long-term, dedicated federal funding for public transportation.

Museum groundbreaking to snarl traffic around Mall
8:40 A.M. Update:
President Obama, Michelle Obama and former first lady Laura Bush are expected to speak at the groundbreaking for the National Museum of African American History and Culture later this morning. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. inside a tent on the museum’s future site at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue NW.

Virginia Railway Express sets hearings on proposed fare increase
Virginia Railway Express officials have announced a series of hearings so riders can ask questions and comment on the agency’s proposed fiscal 2013 budget.
If adopted, the budget would mean an average hike of 3 percent for passengers. The move would come on the heels of a reduction in pretax transit benefits allowed under federal law. The proposed increases are due to several factors, including contractor fee hikes and projected higher gas prices, VRE officials have said.

Reagan National Airport sets passenger record
Air traffic at Reagan National Airport grew to record levels last year, serving 18.8 million passengers, according to figures released Tuesday by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
Officials said that growth was almost 4 percent ahead of 2010. However, MWAA, which operates both Reagan and Dulles International airports, said traffic at Dulles fell 1.6 percent compared to 2010.

VDOT seeks to ease Beltway delays at I-66
This is what the Virginia Department of Transportation will do to reduce the worst new construction zone congestion in the D.C. region: 1) Restore the Exit 49 ramp on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway at I-66 to two lanes, 2) add a fifth lane along westbound I-66 at the interchange.

495 Express Lanes project closing Route 7 ramp
While many of the traffic pattern changes in the 495 Express Lanes work zone have been temporary, there’s one coming this week that is permanent and significant.
On Friday, the Virginia Department of Transportation plans to close the right-side ramp from eastbound Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to the Capital Beltway’s inner loop and turn on a new traffic signal. Thereafter, the eastbound traffic heading for the inner loop will have to make a left turn.
